Dopo il suo debutto con la Chicago Symphony Orchestra all'età di 14 anni, il violoncellista è pluripremiato dell'International JS Bach Competition di Lipsia, ha vinto l'International Pablo Casals Award, è stato Medaglia d'Oro della Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, ha ricevuto il Prix de l'APCAV del Verbier Festival ed è stato insignito del prestigioso "Talent Adami Classique". Le esibizioni in festival includono Ravinia e Verbier, Lincoln Center, SuperCello (Pechino) e la Cello Biënnale Amsterdam.

Con la pianista Anastasiya Magamedova ha formato il Duo Gray-Magamedova — vincitori del terzo premio della European Chamber Music Competition 2025 e hanno suonato in tutta Europa, America e Medio Oriente. Insieme sono supportati dalla Fondation Banque Populaire. Where Music Grows (2026), un documentario di lungometraggio sulla Scandinavian Cello School diretto dalla regista pluripremiata internazionalmente Katrine Philp (Good Company Pictures), presenta il Duo. Il loro prossimo album di debutto Once upon a time… su Aparté fa parte del loro progetto Fairytales, basato su brani ispirati da storie.

Durante i suoi studi con Hans Jørgen Jensen a Chicago, Jérôme Pernoo a Parigi, Frans Helmerson a Berlino e Ivan Monighetti a Madrid ha vinto numerosi premi nazionali e internazionali — ad esempio, il primo premio al "World's Biggest Stage" International Competition 2022 (dedicato alla musica contemporanea), laureato al "Classic Strings" International Competition (Dubai) e il premio speciale al Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann. Upcoming highlights include playing Schumann’s Concerto with the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, conducting from the cello, and the March 2027 release on Aparté of the album Once upon a time… alongside pianist Anastasiya Magamedova. Recent highlights include his debut with the BBC Philharmonic playing Rautavaara's 2nd Concerto Towards the Horizon, his concerto debut in New York at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall and performing with the Armenian State Orchestra, Orchestre des lauréats du Conservatoire, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, and the Metamorphosen Berlin Chamber Orchestra, and at the Berlin Philharmonie, Dubai’s Theatre of Digital Arts, the State Opera Theatre of Tajikistan and the Casals Forum Kronberg.

Following his debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the age of 14, the cellist is a multiple prizewinner of the International JS Bach Competition in Leipzig, won the International Pablo Casals Award, was a Gold Medalist of the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, received the Verbier Festival’s Prix de l’APCAV award, and was awarded the prestigious “Talent Adami Classique”. Festival performances include Ravinia and Verbier, Lincoln Center, SuperCello (Beijing), and the Cello Biënnale Amsterdam. With pianist Anastasiya Magamedova, they formed the Duo Gray-Magamedova — 3rd prize winners of the 2025 European Chamber Music Competition and have performed across Europe, America and the Middle East. Together, they are supported by the Fondation Banque Populaire. Where Music Grows (2026), a feature length documentary about Scandinavian Cello School directed by international award winning Katrine Philp (Good Company Pictures) features the Duo. Their upcoming debut album Once upon a time… on Aparté is part of their Fairytales project, based around pieces inspired by stories.

Since 2024, Johannes has been assistant professor at the Scandinavian Cello School in Denmark.
